The Young and the Restless character Nikki Newman celebrated her birthday last May with a gala party at the Neil Winters Jazz Lounge. In real-life, Nikki’s portrayer, Melody Thomas Scott, is celebrating her birthday now, on April 18.
Happy Birthday, The Young and the Restless star Melody Thomas Scott

Born Melody Ann Thomas on April 18 in Los Angeles, Thomas Scott made her big screen debut playing a young Marnie in the Alfred Hitchcock film, Marnie. She worked regularly as an actress in both film and on television in shows including Wagon Train, My Three Sons, and The Waltons. Also, Thomas Scott appeared in John Wayne’s last film The Shootist.
In 1979, she was up for both a sitcom pilot and the role of Nikki on Y&R. Despite Thomas Scott’s fondness for comedy (the actress has brilliant comedic timing!), her agent encouraged her to accept the part of Nikki.
Once paired with Eric Braeden’s Victor Newman, Thomas Scott became half of a legendary duo, Victor and Nikki. Victor and Nikki were wed in a lavish gala at the Colonnade Room in 1984. The following year, Thomas wed Y&R producer Edward J. Scott. The couple has three daughters, Jennifer, Alexandra, and Elizabeth.
Thomas Scott has enjoyed several front-burner tales on Y&R over the years. Nikki was once diagnosed with a fatal condition, but she kept her remission a secret from Victor, hoping not to lose him.
Nikki gave birth to Victor’s two children, Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and Nicholas (Joshua Morrow), but she and Victor split in 1989. Each went on to have other love interests and even marriages, but viewers were always hoping that the couple would reunite.
They did when Nikki was on her deathbed as she remarried Victor. As she lingered between the earthly realm and the other side, Victor’s love for Nikki gave her the will. It took a few more years, but the couple rewed legally in 2002. The character has battled alcoholism and was diagnosed with MS.
Celebrating her birthday and many years on Y&R

Victor and Nikki, while currently wed, are on the outs right now. Victor is determined to bring down Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), while Nikki is steadfastly defending her former husband.
In 1999, Thomas Scott was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (the year Susan Lucci won for playing Erica on All My Children).
In 2020, Thomas Scott released her memoir, Always Young and Restless: My Life On and Off America’s #1 Daytime Drama.
In 2024, Thomas Scott and Scott were honored with the Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award for their contributions to daytime drama.
Last year, Thomas Scott learned that she was being given the honor of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Soap Central wishes Melody Thomas Scott a happy birthday and many happy returns!
