According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead was taken into custody after he allegedly opened fire on multiple people at a bonfire after an argument.

Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of multiple individuals being shot on October 19.

Upon arrival, they discovered three victims with gunshot wounds: a 21-year-old male, an 18-year-old male, and an 18-year-old female. A fourth victim, a 20-year-old female, was transported to a hospital by private vehicle.

On Tuesday, October 21, dozens gathered at Cleveland High School’s football field for a vigil. Investigators revealed that an argument at a bonfire sparked the shooting.

One of the victims, Kimber Mills, was in critical condition, with family members stating that doctors have informed them there is little they can do to save the teen.

Whitehead was initially charged with three counts of attempted murder, each carrying a $60,000 bond. An additional murder charge was filed against Whitehead on Wednesday, carrying no bond. He remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail as the investigation continues.

According to WBRC, Kimber Mills was a Cleveland High School cheerleader. Her sister, Emily Mills, told the outlet that Kimber’s heart and lungs have been matched with recipients for organ donation.

“We hope that he gets what he deserves. The max of what he deserves,” Emily Mills’ told reporters with WTMV.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help support Mills’ family. Organizers aim to raise $50,000 for medical expenses, and has collected more than $26,000 thanks to support from others.

“On behalf of the class of 2026, the facility and staff of Cleveland High School and the Cleveland community please join us in helping them in any way that we can,” a caption on the GoFundMe campaign reads.
